Fourth Thursdays: Discs of Jammotron

Reaganomix

Reaganomix: The Best (and the rest) Of The '80s

Saturdays 7PM-2AM

“My fellow Americans,

“I've been dead for a while, but I want to sound off on what passes for the '80s these days. I'm talking about radio stations playing I Ran, Karma Chameleon, and 1999 over and over for hours on end. It drives me crazy, and I can't even remember what happened five minutes ago! I DO remember the '80s, though, and they weren't like that at all.

“First, there was a lot more going on in music than the Top 40 hits that pass for "Best of the '80s" now. You had old-school hip hop, synth punk, electro-funk, new wave, dance, butt rock, hair metal...ah, those Mötley Crüe boys were such characters.

“Second, it wasn't nearly so happy-go-lucky a time as the revisionists like to pretend. You people were broke.!My buddies Ed Meese, Casper Weinberger and I had ALL the money, and we spent it on missile defense and hostage buyouts while you watched Dallas and Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous, waiting for the "trickle down" I promised. And then I gave you food handouts instead! (The cheese was a nice touch, don't you think?)

What was I getting at? Oh, yes: hard times inspired all that musical creativity so, really, you have me to thank for it!

“Now ditch that Culture Club / Madonna rut and get your butts down to Ground Kontrol every Saturday night for Reaganomix. Each week a different DJ plays The REST Of The '80s: Top 40, and some of the stuff that missed; remixes you haven‘t heard in years; and whole styles of music you forgot about. I know I did!

“And you can play Missile Command. 'We begin bombing in five minutes!' Ah, that joke never gets old.
